How About An E-commerce Business?
Posted on 30 January 2012 No commentsSource: Article Snatch
There are numerous ways to make money online. If you are the type who has always wanted to own your own store, but cannot afford the cost of starting a brick and mortar shop, an E-commerce website may be right for you. Even beginners who have never run a business before can handle these types of sites. Typically with this type of business you don’t directly deal with products. That all gets handled for you by a distributor or parent company. All you have to do is set up the site, promote it, and then handle the profit from sales.
One option for E-commerce is to find distributors who will drop ship the type of goods you want to sell. After you find your distributor(s), you need to select how you want to set up your website. You can go with an all inclusive E-commerce hosting package (like Yahoo Merchant Solutions or similar system), which is nice because they give you tools for site design, catalogue building, and checkout tools. You can also design your own site, have it hosted through any web hosting solution, and incorporate checkout and catalogue tools yourself. Either way, you decide the items to list on your site. This method can be more time consuming to get up and running, but gives you more flexibility in the items you can carry.
Another form of E-commerce is where you partner with an existing company and they provide you with a “mirror” website. The downside to this type of system is that your inventory selection is typically limited to what is being carried by the parent company. If you are the busy type and are looking for something that is quick and easy to start up, this would be a good option. Everything is typically set up for you and automated, even the payment system installation. All that is left for you is to possibly tweak the site (in allowed) and promote it.
If you already have a website, a third option is affiliate advertising items for other companies. Many big name companies have affiliate programs you can join for free. You post links and banners to items and you get money for each item sold through your link. Companies like Amazon and Barnes & Noble only pay a small percentage for each sale, but have common and very popular consumer goods. Companies like Clickbank generally pay much more per sale, but tend to deal with informational products. The type goods you advertise should be determined by the nature of your website. If you already have steady traffic coming to your site and a target audience, this can be a good option for you.
Regardless of the type of E-commerce site you decide on, it will not be successful without customers. You have to become educated in what the options are for promoting your site and what fits in our budget. The advertising method that works best will depend on the type of products you are trying to sale. There is unfortunately not a one-size-fits-all method that works for all forms of E-commerce. It will most likely take some time and patience to get things set up the way you want them and to figure out what methods of promoting work best for you.

Posted on 16 June 2011 No commentsSource: Articlesnatch
Transformation in modus operandi of business transactions shows that those who update themselves according to the technological changes place themselves at safe business environment. Emergence of Internet technology helped companies sell their products or services online to buyers wherein buyers needed to fill all the required detail and pay online for their transaction; notwithstanding what security of payment is required buy the buyer during the transaction.
Though there are several types of ecommerce activities, the two foremost i.e. B2B and B2C have been gaining momentum. Whereas B2B stands for Business-to-business, B2C is Business-to Consumers. In B2B caters to the specific requirements of businesses in commodity exchange or the mutual transactions between two business organizations. On the other hand, B2C deals with consumers directly wherein individual consumers buy products online paying online e.g. eBay, Snapdeal, etc.
An ecommerce web development company gives significant importance to security feature which ensures buyers that their transaction is safe and secure as well as fraud-proof. Plenty of online fraudulent cases happening globally show that online transactions too are not safe and a lot of effort has to be put to make them safe and secure. Nevertheless, buyers often feel apprehensive about the company, paying online, receiving the ordered product or service, etc.
Similarly, an e-commerce web development company should ensure that companies involved in online transactions with consumers are able to provide safety and security of the data furnished during online transaction. Some major online activities such as electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, electronic data interchange (EDI), Internet marketing, online transaction processing, etc. are the cardinal part of e-commerce web development service.
Along with the above mentioned ecommerce web development services, some other such services including of inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems development are fundamental. However, without the World Wide Web, ecommerce cannot be made possible as it is something which is used at one point or the other when an online transaction is made. Thanks to the a range of technologies including of e-mail, mobile devices, telephones, etc. ecommerce is swift and available.
With e-commerce website, companies can consolidate their international trade and commerce as the outreach of WWW is global and buyers or business from various parts of the world are eager to sell or buy the products or services. E-integration is pivotal in ecommerce activity in accentuating the commercial activities with global interactive business.

How to Start an e-commerce Business
Posted on 9 June 2011 No commentsSource: Buzzle
Knowing how to start e-commerce businesses is one of the first steps to setting up an online business. First, the initial business plan and idea must be established, and then the e-commerce structure follows. In case you need instruction on the initial business plan of an online business, I will briefly outline it. If you are familiar with business plans, then skip to the third paragraph.
A business plan defines what service or goods your business will provide. It also defines who your customers are, and which market your business should serve. Also, it includes a market analysis, which determines profitability and potential of the market you intend to serve. Next, it defines direction of your business development and growth, as well as operations. In a nutshell, that is a very simplistic business plan.
In order for me to describe the process of starting an e-commerce business, I will describe the outline of how e-commerce works. First, a customer visits a Web site that retails goods. Next, the customer selects goods to make a purchase. The selected goods are added to a shopping cart system. Once the customer is ready to pay for the goods he proceeds to the checkout, where he provides payment and arrangements to receive the goods. Finally, a receipt of purchase is provided via e-mail and usually posted on the screen.
Next, we look at the structure that facilitates this process. First, the e-commerce site is constructed on a Web site that one makes with Web development software. This kind of software is usually Microsoft Front Page or other HTML graphical software, like Flash Dream Weaver, or Joomla. The shopping cart system is usually simple to install software, like php extensions. Once the Web site is setup and the shopping cart system is loaded, the goods may be listed and priced for sale on the shopping cart system.
The next step is the payment processing. A merchant (an e-commerce Web site owner) must establish a bank account and an agreement with a payment processor. A payment processor is an entity that processes credit card numbers and other forms of payment. Processor agreements are termed contracts that usually require a merchant to provide a 1-800 number so that customers may receive help with their purchases should they need. The contracts are usually a minimum of 2 year service agreement. Also, the merchant’s bank account must be linked to the processor, so deposits and withdrawals may be made.
A merchant, like any other business retailer, must provide the processor with a tax identification number or social security (if the merchant is a sole proprietorship). Since we are discussing legal requirements, another need-to-know fact is that sales tax is only applicable if the purchaser’s home state is the same as the shipping point of the goods purchased. For example, if I’m from Texas and I purchase goods to be shipped to my home address in San Antonio, TX, and the merchant lives and ships from New York, NY, I don’t pay sales tax. However, this doesn’t mean that the merchant is tax exempt, federally.
The transportation of goods is an important step. Most e-commerce Web sites are set up for drop shipping. Drop shipping is simply a middle-man approach to retailing on the Web. Drop shipping setup is setup to process orders and payment, but the merchant doesn’t ship the goods. Actually, the order is relayed to a wholesaler, who in turn ships the goods to the original customer. In the end, the e-commerce site only captures a margin of profit from each good sold. Other e-commerce web sites function so that they process the orders and ship the goods all in-house. This is more of an e-bay approach. Beware if high volumes occur, and then you may need to hire help so that you can fill all the orders.
Overall, this is the general instruction of how to start e-commerce businesses. Now that you have seen how it functions inside and out, it’s time for you to begin your business planning.

A Compatible E-Commerce Solution for Your SEO Campaign
Posted on 5 May 2011 No commentsSource: Buzzle
The most ambitious Internet retailers, hoping to emulate the style and online influence of Amazon.com and other recognized brands, tend to aim for sprawling electronic retail websites that may look pretty but accomplish little else. If all the push is towards what appears on the front end instead of a concerted effort in choosing a reliable e-commerce solution from the get go, these decisions can ultimately impact the long-term success of any SEO campaign.
Most Internet retailers opt to use an out of the box e-commerce solution, eliminating the need to build something more suitable from the ground up. Out of the box software, however, may lack some of the flexibility that is required to implement a robust SEO campaign. On the other hand, building a fully customized e-commerce platform can be outright expensive. In an ideal situation, you will want to look for something that is somewhere in between. To help you bridge the gap, we’ve identified four major requirements when shopping for a suitable e-commerce solution that’s compatible with your SEO campaign.
The Proof’s in the Code
Ideally, we would always like to have the code available for us to modify if needed. This constant accessibility allows us to set up server behavior recommendations as well as change the way that things work or function in order to ensure that they are more effective for your SEO campaign. Many vendors will not give out their codes unless you pay them a premium, sometimes upwards of $10,000 per site using that code only, and many vendors may be reluctant to allow even that option.
Search engines only care about resulting code, meaning the HTML is sent to the browser post-parse. So, for an e-commerce website to have an effective SEO campaign, the SEO company you’ve enlisted may need the ability to modify how the software displays the code while the page is being dynamically built. This usually includes any category pages, product pages, or even some of the more “static” pages, such as the privacy policy, site map, and home page.
Customizable Product Administration
Sometimes we run across platforms that allow us to customize certain attributes of pages from the back-end administration, including Title tags, Meta tags, and body content. This is a great advantage when working with an e-commerce solution that does not provide any sort of code access, as that provides the only way for us to “individualize” the hundreds of dynamic pages that may be present on your website when working on your SEO campaign.
Occasionally, however, the administration sections for your e-commerce solution are not all that robust, and once we have proper access to the underlying code, we have to develop code “hacks” in order to get the recommendations for your SEO campaign onto the website. For instance, when adding these “hacks” to client websites, they often take the form of what appears to be a small configuration file with our recommendations attached to variables. And depending on the page, our configuration file will spit out the proper recommendations for that page, manually adding them where they need to go. Unfortunately, this is usually only accomplished with direct access to underlying code in your e-commerce solution. Furthermore, if direct access is not given, we’re often stuck between a rock and a hard place.
A Linux-Based OS
Until IIS can handle .htaccess files (tiny files allowing a wide range of flexibility for your website), an e-commerce solution that runs under Linux is highly desirable for myriad of tasks, such as flattening URLs. Some Windows applications have found ways around this, but they are usually not very aesthetically appealing and don’t function as well as a simple rewrite would. Linux, our operating system of choice, is able to run more applications, and the operating system and associated software are much cheaper than their Windows counterparts.
The .htaccess file is a very powerful tool that is becoming more and more popular in the creation of a suitable e-commerce solution. Part of its power comes from its ability to “flatten URLs” – for example, it takes http://www.example.com/products.php?id=437 and changes it into something more friendly, like http://www.example.com/products/Yellow-School-Bus/437/. By flattening the URL, we make it easier for search engine spiders to crawl the website – ridding ourselves of dynamic querystrings, which, oftentimes, the spiders have difficulty crawling. Furthermore, flattening URLs allows us to add keyphrases from your SEO campaign into the URL to make them even more attractive to the search engines. And even though the URL may appear to be different, because of the .htaccess file, it will work exactly as it did prior to the flattening process.
Another key advantage of Linux is the ability to implement 301 redirects rather quickly. One of the most trivial tasks is to redirect the non-www to the www version of a website (for instance, http://example.com to http://www.example.com) – which can be completed entirely on Linux in just two lines that are added to an .htacess file. Implementing this on IIS (Windows) turns out to be an arduous task that involves having root access to the server, which is not often granted by hosting companies.
Flexibility is Key
Often, an SEO company will need to change how a page is displayed or what is displayed and when, perhaps in order to boost rankings and traffic for your SEO campaign. This is where the flexibility of the software comes into play for any effective e-commerce solution. For instance, there is an e-commerce solution that can provide header, footer, and page templates directly through the backend administration.
However, there are some vendors that prefer to lock away the templates by hard-coding them into the site code. The real paradox is when they won’t give you access to the code to modify these things for yourself. This kind of inflexibility can spell disaster for any SEO campaign.
Avoiding Long-Term Hassles
At this point in time, there aren’t any specific recommendations to give on a top performing e-commerce solution as nothing we’ve come across thus far is anywhere near perfect. Unless your company has an in-house SEO technician, you’d be wise to engage a knowledgeable SEO company to avoid the headaches that come with finding out that you’ve spent a significant amount of time and money on an e-commerce solution that does not offer the flexibility needed for a successful SEO campaign.
If you end up choosing an e-commerce solution that doesn’t meet the requirements outlined above, you may just end up with a half optimized site that fails to achieve the rankings and traffic you’ve been hoping for at the outset of your SEO campaign.

Oscommerce Customization and You
Posted on 7 March 2011 No commentsThere are a lot of services on the internet that offer templates and applications for oscommerce customization. When deciding on how to customize your website with the solutions that work best for you think about the aspects that you would like to see on the website. Items such as an easy viewable order history, product reviews, a display of what other customers have ordered with that product will aid in creating an oscommerce system that is customized to the needs of the user, which will bring about more business for you in the long run.
In regards to running a business there are certain aspects of oscommerce customization that as a business owner you want to keep in mind to keep the business running smoothly. For starters never loose touch with customers. Keep the website in their minds by sending them newsletters regarding products and services that your business offers. If they are reminded that your business is around it will make you their number one choice to come back to when they want to buy more products.
Oscommerce customization can be designed to offer statistics on customers. Tracking what the most frequent product being sold is. As well as what your customers are interested in. One of the best options to add in is showing what other items customers purchased when they bought the same product. To advertise other products that could have been missed may bring about more money for your business. To make things easier have a program that can print packaging lists and invoices directly from the order screen. It will save time and time is money.
Of course to allow any business to run smoothly and professionally you have to have good support and in the case of oscommerce customization good technical support is a must. For both the company and it’s users. The importance of templates should never be underestimated to keep everything looking organized and uniform. Also be sure to have a system that allows for easy backup and restoration of a database. One coupon can bring in several sales you otherwise would never make. And once you have a customer, you can continue to follow up, offer more coupons and offers, and keep that customer over the long term.

Imagine having one of your existing customers give a gift certificate to a friend, and having that friend come into your store, make a purchase, and become an ongoing customer.
The great thing about gift certificates is that you not only gain a new customer, but you also make the full sale price of the gift certificate, and offer your customers something new that they cannot get at many of your competitors, who aren’t using Yahoo Merchant and do not have the ability to easily offer gift certificates.

E-commerce shopping cart solutions
Posted on 18 February 2011 No commentsWhen we think of the words ‘shopping cart’, the first thing that immediately pops into our minds is the shopping cart that we use in our local grocery or department store. However, when we talk about shopping carts online or at e-commerce websites, we are not talking about an actual object. A shopping cart is simply an application that makes a list of items that a customer wants to purchase.
So what exactly is a shopping cart then? A shopping cart is a type of software that lets a customer on an e-commerce website select the items he or she wishes to purchase and then stores them in a virtual shopping cart. From here the customer can then view the items, and add or delete them, if he or she changes their mind before paying for the purchases. Basically what this implies is that a virtual shopping cart is more or less the same as a real shopping cart as performs the same function. It simply groups together the items you wish to purchase before you can actually pay for them.
Shopping Cart Software
Shopping cart software lets people purchase items from an e-commerce website by keeping track of what a person has purchased and the prices of the goods or service as well. While there are many types of software that you can use in place of a shopping cart such as a catalogue software or an order form, shopping cart softwares are not only much more simpler to use but they are also more efficient as well. Yes, some shopping cart softwares are expensive, but in the long run it saves your customers both time and money because it helps to simplify the entire shopping process by grouping things that one wishes to purchase together.
A popular misconception that exists about shopping carts is that they handle the entire financial transaction; however this is not the case. A shopping cart does not handle the entire financial transaction it only acts as a front end which passes information via a secure connection to a payment gateway, where the transactions are ultimately made.
It is critical that you choose the best shopping cart solution for your e-commerce website as this will effect the overall success or failure of your site. The good news is that there is a plethora of shopping cart solutions available to cater to every person’s needs, however, this also means that which so much choice it is also be difficult to make a decision. What you mainly need to keep in mind is that the software that you purchase should be user friendly and simple to use.
Some benefits of shopping carts include:
* The ability to accept credit cards
* Web based administration
* Flexible shipping & tax options
* Built-in site optimization tools
* & no fixed term contracts
